SANCTUS (Saunders) (Between 1952 & 1955) - Single - White -Hybrid. A new offering. Single, white, blended faint blush, with center of gold. Second generation (Saunders' 1955 catalog.) F3 generation - Miss Saunders' letter. Albiflora x officinalis, second or third generation. Saunders catalog and letter, 1955.

SAN DIEGO (Auten, 1931) - Jap. - Red -Yellow - Midseason. A striking light red and yellow Jap; very distinct, a mixture of colors. Light red with golden salmon tints, bold and striking for landscape. Catalogs and Bulletin 47.

SANDRA K (Kelsey, 1940) - Double - Pink - Midseason. A large, dark pink with strong stems and good foliage. Wild's 1953 catalog.

SANDUSKY (Schneider) - Light Pink or Blush. Bulletin 98, page 19.

SANS SOUCI (Auten, 1930) - Jap. - Pink. Bright ciolaceous pink, center flushed towards white. A light Cathedral. Bulletin 43.

SANTA FE (Auten, 1937) - Semi-Double - Red. A very brilliant red, semi-double, medium sized blooms on a nice strong growing plant. Color holds. Bulletin 69. List in Bulletin 91.

SANTORB (Kelway, 1926) - Single - Red. Crimson-red. Midseason.

SAPHO (Lemoine, 1900) - Double - Lilac-Mauve  - DISCARDED. - Midseason.

SARAH (Pleas, 1913) - Double - Pink - Midseason. Large. Guards are light pink with ball-like incurved center of same color, which becomes blush-white on fully opening. M.

SARAH BERNHARDT (Dessert, 1895) See UMBELLATA ROSEA . Midseason.

SARAH BERNHARDT (Lemoine, 1906) - Double - Pink - Late. Medium height. Fragrant, but not especially so. Very large. Dark rose-pink, edged a trifle lighter, with inconspicuous red edges on a few central petals, and an occasional golden yellow anther in the collar; Floriferous; strong steins. Good foliage. M.

SARAH CARSTENSEN (Terry, 1901) - Double - Pink - Midseason. Dwarf. Not notably fragrant. Light rose-pink, a little paler in the collar and lightly marked crimson in the center. Very free-flowering; stiff stems. Good foliage. M.

SARAH K. THURLOW (Thurlow, 1921) - Double - White - Very Late. Average height. Strong rose fragrance. Large. Globular shape with a whorled collar and incurved rose-like center, having fine smooth outline; half open, very delicate pink, pure white when open, with faint flush in center and red streaks on outer petals. Floriferous; slender, strong stems. Foliage dull light green. M.

SARAH M. NAPIER (Veries, 1930) - Double - Pink. Bright pink edged and marbled silvery white, making a very distinct and attractive two-tone effect. List in Bulletin 91.

SARAH M. WETTENGEL (Wettengel, 1919) - Double - White - Midseason.

SARCOXIE (Wild, 1914) - Double - Red. Tall. Fragrant. Broad guard petals, narrow center petals. Thrifty. Sarcorie Nursery catalog, 1955. M.

SARDONYX (Brant) - "Among reds I have named Zuliema, Amaranthys and Sardonyx from Richard Carvel seed." Mrs. Brant, Iowa City, Iowa. Bulletin 100, page 8.

SATIN ROSE (Lemoine, 1929) - Double - Pink - Midseason. Quite tall. Sweet scented. Rather bending stems, good foliage, large flowers of loose petalage of deep rose pink. This makes a good appearance in the garden. List in Bulletin 60.

SATSUMA (Millet) - Single - Pink - Midseason.

SATURN (Origin unknown) - Jap. - Rosy-White - Midseason.

SAUL - Single. "An old old variety, Saul, never registered with our Society, was by far the largest, but did not retain fine form it had upon opening, for a desirable period." Francis P. Tikalsky. Bulletin 123, page 33. Grove Side Gardens 1955 catalog.

SCARF DANCE (Auten, 1927) - Semi-Double - Pink. A light pink, with narrow long graceful petals, making a well-formed bloom. Plant and stems all one could ask for. For those who like the beautiful in the semi-double this is a splendid acquisition. Bulletin 30. Catalogs and List in 91.

SCARLET TANAGER (Saunders, 1942) - Single - Red - Hybrid. Tall. Blooms of true vermilion red. Officinalis rubra plena x lobata. Lists in Bulletins 91 and 129. Saunders 1955 catalog.

SCHNEIDER'S PINK SINGLE - Single - Pink. Bulletin 94, page 37.

SCHWINDT (Goos & Koenemann, 1910) - Single - Violet-Rose - Midseason.

SEA FOAM (Peterson) - Double - White - DISCARDED - Midseason.

SEA NYMPH (Neeley, 1936) - Semi-Double - Blush - Late. Low plant. Pink to white. Pretty flowers. List in Bulletin 91.

SEA SHELL (Sass, 1937) - Single - Pink - Midseason. Tall. This pink single, was always one of the most admired exhibits at our peony shows. Large flowers of a bright lively pink with a full center of yellow stamens on strong stems. A center of attraction in the garden and simply beautiful as a cut flower. It is one of the best pink singles we have. Bulletin 69. Catalogs.

SEBASTICOOK (Guppy, 1935) - Jap. - Dark Red. Bulletin 60.

SECRETARY FEWKES (Shaylor, 1917) - Double - Pink - Midseason. Tall. Fair rose-like fragrance. Large. Broad, cupped, outer petals and center of pale rose-pink, with a flesh-white collar of narrow petals arranged in bunches with age the flower becomes almost white. Free-flowering; fairly strong stems. Good foliage. M.

SEFTON (Kelway) - Double - Pink - Midseason.

SEIHIN IKEDA (Harding, 1935) - Jap. - Red - Midseason. Tall. Herbaceous. French or reddish purple. Petals tone four (slightly more blue). Petaloids tone two (French chart sheet, "Pourpre"). Petals wide and deep. Petaloids very brilliant red, edged and tipped warm deep gold. Back of petaloids gold. Carpels green tufted with red. Entire plant tall, strong growing, excellent stems, splendid foliage. Entire color effect, much deeper and redder than Current Red. Darker than Departing Sun. Free flowering. Increases well. Distinguished. Bulletin 61.
