Gloucestershire:
Green Cottage, Redhill Lane, Lydney GL15 6BS. Tel 01594 841918. Visits by appointment only. Mrs Margaret Baber has the National Collection of Paeonia lactiflora pre-1915 varieties.
Hidcote Manor Gardens, Hidcote Baitrim, Chipping Campden GL55 6LR. Tel 01386 438333. National Trust garden has pan of the National Collection of peonies, with 20 species and about 40 varieties of herbaceous peony.
Kent:
Penshurst Place, Tonbridge TN11 8DG. Owned by the Viscount de Usie's family, this historic garden has a peony border 120 m long.

Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh EH3 5LR.
Comprehensive collection of peony species displayed in mixed plantings, including a tree peony moved from Alexander Duncan's (see page 84) garden at Arbroath.

Spetchley Park, Near Worcester WR5 1RS (Mr and Mrs RJ Berkeley). About fifty varieties of herbaceous peonies used in mixed and herbaceous borders in the Edwardian tradition. Ellen Willmott, the distinguished gardener and rosarian, was related to the Berkeleys and involved with planning the garden.
