Abstract In this paper, comparative studies on karyotype and C-banding of varieties of Paeonia rockii and those of P. suffruticosa have been first reported. Ten materials were used in karyotype analysis. The result shows that the karyotypes of P. rockii and P. suffruticosa are different. The karyotypical formulae of the five P. rockii varieties is 2n=10 =8m+2st, and that of the five P. suffruticosa varieties is 2n= 10= 6m+2sm+2st. Six varieties were selected from the ten samples for Giemsa C-banding. The terminal C-bands can be observed in all samples, but there are different in number and distribution of C-bands among different varieties. Comparing the C-bands pattern between the varieties of P. rockii and those of P. suffruticosa, iit was found that terminal C-bands in short arms of No. 1 and 3 chromosomes of the varieties of P. suffruticosa can be unexceptionlly observed while those in short arms of the same chromosomes of the varieties of P. rockii can not be observed. The experiments indicate that there exists differences in karyotypes and C-bands pattern between the varieties of P. rockii and those of P. suffruticosa. Furthermore, the taxonomy systematic location of P. rockii was also disscussed.

Key words Paeonia rockii; Paeonia suffruticosa; Karyotype; Giemsa C-banding
