DESFONTAINES, R. Flora Atlantica, sive historia plantarum, quae in Atlante, agro Tunetano et Algeriensi crescunt. Parisiis, C. Panckoucke, (1798-1800). 4 volumes (2 text- & 2 plates-volumes). Large-4to. pp. (6), xx, 444, (2); (4), 458, (2), with 263 engraved plates. Contemporary half green calf, gilt spines with gilt lettering.
Nissen BBI, 475; Stafleu & Cowan 1392. Very scarce in complete state with all plates (numbered 1-261, 76bis, and page 254, i.e. 225bis). Even Nissen seems not to have seen a copy with all 263 plates. 92 of the illustrations are after P.-J. Redouté, 61 after his younger brother H.-J. Redouté, the remainder after Maréchal, Fossier and Martin. The described plant species were collected by the author during a journey in Algeria and Tunesia during the years 1783-1785. The herbarium of 1480 specimens was left to the 'Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle', Paris and is now kept as an 'Herbier Historique'. A fine uniformely bound set of this important flora of North-West Africa.
