MARSCHALL VON BIEBERSTEIN, F.A. Centuria plantarum rariorum Rossiae meridionalis praesertim Tauriae et Caucasi iconibus descriptionibusque illustrata. Charkov, typis Academicis, 1810. Imperial-folio (585 x 350mm). With 50 handcoloured engraved plates, and 50 leaves of descriptive text.
Published in 70 copies for presentation only, this is one of the rarest and most attractive illustrated floras of Russia. Only the first part of the projected Centuria was published during his lifetime. The work has never been completed although a further 30 plates were posthumously issued in Leningrad 1832-1843, which are excessively rare. The beautiful plates are drawn by L. Choris. The authors herbarium with some 10.000 specimens is now in Leningrad. Stafleu's statement that 60 plates were published in 1810 is incorrect. Only 3 major botanical iconographies on the flora of Russia appeared, the present work, the work by Pallas and the one by Ledebour. A fine uncut copy with the bookplate of Arpad Plesh.
