SOLANGE SUPREME (Lemoine) - Double - White - Late. A better blooming, disease free strain of the old variety developed here. Creamy white with buff tints. Very compact and double. Found invariably in the prize winning classes.

SOLFATARE (Calot, 1861) - Double - White - Midseason.

SOLOT FLIGHT (Saunders, 1935) - Jap. - Blush - Midseason. Very large flesh guards with center of pale yellow. List in Bulletin 91.

SOME GANOKO (Origin unknown) - Jap. - Red - Midseason. About 2' high. Very fragrant. Large. Broad, waved and cupped guard petals of clear dark crimson; broad, flat center of much crinkled light buff staminodes, tinted with rose-red markings, carpels pale yellow, with a white line at the base; very fragrant. Fairly strong growth; slightly spreading; free-blooming. Foliage dark green, broad and ruffled. "A very beautiful flower but lacks substance." Fewkes. M.

SOMERTON (Kelway) - Single - Cerise-Pink - Midseason.

SONO-ONO-SAKAE (Japan) - Listed by Krekler, 1955. Mr. Peyton says this is a Smirnow importation from Japan.

SOOTHSAYER (Auten, 1950) - Single - Pink - Hybrid. Deep cerise pink. Officinalis x albiflora. List in Bulletin 129.

SOPHIE (Saunders, 1940) - Semi-Double - Cherry - Hybrid. Deepest bright cherry semi-double; fine stems. Leaves slightly furled. Popular variety. Albiflora x lobata. List in Bulletin 129.

SOPS OF WINE (Secor, 1922) - Double - Red - Late. Dwarf. Dark red considerable purple. Fairly floriferous stiff stems. Long narrow, recurved foliage. M.

SOUVENIR de LOUIS BIGOT (Dessert, 1913) - Double - Pink - Midseason. Medium height. Mildly fragrant. Large. Vivid rose-pink, brightening to shell-pink in the center, all petals slightly lighter at the edges. Floriferous, strong stems. Good foliage. Close to Walter Faxon color group in that it has no trace of the mauve and old-rose shades which are characteristic of many pink varieties. M.

SPARKLES (Glasscock, 1946) - Semi-Double - Scarlet Red - Early - Hybrid. Medium height. Incurved petals and stamens attached to their edges. Carpels stay hidden until the petals fall. Stems are stiff, upright and of medium height. Albiflora x officinalis. Bulletin 103 and list in 129.

SPARKLING STAR (Bigger, 1953) - Single - Pink - Early. About 30" tall. Bright dark pink. Parentage Mary Brand x unknown. Seedling No. 15-37. The flower is medium to large and has a lot of life. The color carries better than most pinks. It has strong stems and good, bright green foliage. Bulletin 130.

SPEEDWELL (Hollis., 1907) - Double - Pink - Midseason.

SPINNING WHEEL (Babcock, 1929) - Jap. - Deep Pink. List in Bulletin 91.

SPION KOP (Kelway, 1918-22) - Double - Cerise-Pink - Midseason.

SPLENDIDA (Guerin, 1850) - Double - Pink - Late. Tall. Notable for its pleasant fragrance. Very large. Light old-rose pink becoming almost white with age; floriferous, stiff steins. Good foliage. Notable for its great size and unusually agreeable perfume. Valuable for garden decoration. M.

SPLENDOR (Sass, 1932) - Double - Red - Late. A very brilliant dark red of full rose type. Stems straight and upright. Bulletin 49.

SPOON RIVER (Auten, 1931) - Double - Pink. Medium height. Rose fragrant. An unusual name for a fine, full double peony of unusual coloring; creamy magenta. Decidely different. Stiff stems. Bulletin 47.
