MATILDA LEWIS. (Saunders, 1921.) 9.0.

Double type; large; midseason. Loosely formed blooms of dark maroon. Medium tall; upright, vigorous growth; stiff stems. Foliage dark green.

Like all reds of this shade, the flowers have a tendency to turn black in very bright sunlight. Very nearly the same color as M. Martin Cahuzac, foliage and stems also very similar, but the flower is better filled out, comes about a week later, and the plant is generally a better grower. Should not be confused with Mrs. John M. Lewis (Lewis) of somewhat similar color.

MATILDA LEWIS Midseason. Large, very dark red. Plant is medium tall, good foliage.

Matilda Lewis (Saunders 1921) L.  Double; dark maroon with some stamens embedded.  Large, loosely formed yet symmetrical flower, long known as an exhibition winner.  Mild fragrance.  Dark color will sometimes absorb too much heat in direct sun, a bit of shade protects.  One of the best doubles in the landscape when suitably sited. Vigorous; makes a large, stout bush; foliage dark green.  Good fall color.  Pollen and occasional seeds.
